I think the electronic guides are quite often not that accurate  - perhaps they give the predicted estimate ?  It could be approaching mag. 11 in a few weeks.

I agree. You are better off taking the SGL collective's thoughts on that (& position). Sky Safari Pro is a splendid package.... but comets and asteroids are not it's forte. E.g. Yesterday Ceres was showing about 8° out!!

For positioning I've always found http://cometchasing.skyhound.com/ to be pretty sharp, though the prediction of what size of scope can see an object is optimistic. Maybe it assumes dark skies and ideal seeing conditions, in which case I'll never be up there, but as it is my 10" scope has little chance of seeing a comet that it reckons a 6" can see.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've tried and failed to find it several times, not helped by the fact that being low in Ursa Major I only really get a good look at it in the evening when it's not quite dark, then it disappears behind a huge oak tree and doesn't come up again until the early hours. Still it seems to be getting a little brighter every day, and isn't due to be at its closest to Earth until next June. Hopefully visible in this hemisphere!
