Great weekend. Marc and Helen came up Friday and I took them straight up to Kielder camp site. They decided to stop there. I traipsed home then returned for the evening.  Good choice as the skies cleared well. Still some high cloud but wasn't too bad considering.

Met up with Gain, Tony and searched out Derek (physopto) had a really great chat and a lovely beer! Cheers Derek!

Stayed till late then travelled home. Back up on Saturday with the kids for the talks which were excellent. Then the pub for tea. Skies were cloudy so took kids home early.

A pretty good weekend! And great to meet so many lovely people at Kielder star party.

Just back from Kielder myself...Marc and Helen left just ahead of me! Seems they had a great time.

Got almost two hours on Thursday night and Friday night was a treat from 7.30 till 1.45...just shows you shouldn't put all your trust in the weather forecast. Saturday night was cloudy with odd stars appearing from time to time..

it was good seeing Soupy and the kiddies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday! Great times on the field and in the warm room/ and pub.

Over 70 turned up to my talk and received alot of positive feedback for it....

My 24in was on display and even managed to setup the AP rig but did almost no astronomy as I was too busy socialising and enjoying a  few strong bevvies ( no kids yay!). Made it an early finish last night (2am) unlike the previous two 6am bedtimes.

Just an amazing few days spent seeing old friends again and meeting new ones!..

Shame there were not more WADAS members present!

Oooo wouldn't mind keeping the solarscope warm over winter please if no-one else minds....!

Kielder was... moist. As it was just me n' Hx, we opted to stay on-site at the star camp in the end. We'd packed the 5 man tent / air bed / loo / cooking gear etc anyways - got an entire campervan's worth in there, just no van! Ground was squishy so opted for a raised bit of grass between the river & hard standings, 20ft from Gain & Tony. Was in reach of the site wifi (yay for intarwebz), & didn't need power hookup thanks to the battery box. Friday night from 7 til 1am was gorgeously clear. Got plenty of time at the eyepiece with the Dob. Saturday night was a cloud-out, but the talks n' forest walks in the mist thru the day were great.

Battery powered the tent's disco lights etc fine for the weekend, and kept both phones & MacBooks charged, and ran a few Pi's so all in all a successful one.

Diet of Haribo, bacon n' burgers for the weekend has taken it's toll on the old thunderbox however... or not, as the case would seem!!

EDIT: I MAY have given the impression to all in the warm room that I'm a complete psycho who hunts out cats to put socks on their heads and sellotape their tails to window sills. *oops*

I assure folks I'm not. That would be the aspergers-lack-of-appropriate-social-filter-in-new-situations problem - soz!

Looking clear Tuesday 1st Nov tomorrow night for the backyard, couldn't make Keilder due to family reason in the end, could have maybe risked Saturday but poor weather forecast made the decision for me in the end.

Shame you missed Friday Eric...you would have experienced one of those elusive Kielder starlit nights!

Finally managed to get some clear skies last night. There was lots of moisture and some cloud but I made the most of it

Andromida, Pleiades, M36,37, Orion, M81, Cigar Galaxy, M110 just to name a few. I was just glad to get out.

Hi all,

Managed  to get out to Sutton Bank on Tuesday night and took this image of the orion nebula and the running man.

Had set out to attempt the cocoon nebula but really struggled to pick it out, so decided to wait until orion was high enough in the sky and get a few subs.

I took 9x10min subs at iso800, 8 darks and 20 bias. I’ve also cropped the image slightly. Its my first attempt at orion, looking at the image I should have kept the subs shorter as I’ve completely blown the centre out. Might try a few shorter subs and add to the image at a later date (once I figure out how to do it!)

My processing skills are very limited so any tips/hints on how to get more from the image would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully see you at the meeting tonight.

Absolutely stunning image there Dec. Beautiful detail. I am just learning processing myself and I'd be thrilled to get a result like that :)

Just a reminder that we have our meeting tonight where guest speaker James Lees will give his presentation entitled Space: It Gets Weird.

See you all this evening (apart from those who are away gallivanting)

Chris

Cheers Chris. I'm using Photoshop but apart from levels, curves and messing with the colour saturation don't really know what the rest of it does. I tried using layer masks recently after following an online tutorial but had little success.

Thanks Vicky. The processing is definitely an art in itself. Been reading a bit about it and watching online tutorials but my progress is slow.

Looking forward to the talk tonight.
