Well, I'm bored! Its been a lousy Summer, not enough darkness etc... so I thought I would look back through some old data. And while flicking around the folders it occured to me that there were a few decent example images that could be used for the benefit of others who havent been so lucky with the weather, for those just starting out - giving you an idea of what to expect when working with Ha, or the more experienced imager who might like to test an idea.

Its a fairly moderate stack of data, three hours in a mixture of 10 and 15min subs, fully calibrated. Its not going to win any awards, but its clean enough to work with. Its also uncropped, so you might need to trim the edges just a little :)

Post your efforts in the thread below. I'd like to see what people come up with as processes by others are never identical. Ive saved it off as a TIFF, so it should work for everybody.

Hint: For Ps users, layer masking will help a lot! ;)

OK, I'll bite.. You just missed critical focus with this - or maybe I'm too used to the star profiles I see with the refractor. Anyway, tried to correct for that a bit.     C

Nice one Chris, you know what... all that complaining I did earlier about the weather? lol... its gone clear and Ive got the gear outside for the first time in over 5 weeks! :)

But keeping an eye on the rain radar ;)   dont want my new toy getting damp (first light tonite).

I was tempted myself but there's too many heavy showers around to risk it when you don't have an observatory you can just shut the roof on!

I hope your having better luck than I did tonight. In an hour and a half I managed to only get 6 x 300 sec subs due to clouds keep rolling over. It even rained slightly so I've decided to call it a night. Now that my setup is back indoors it's looking perfectly clear now

Ooh! Nice!

1) Open with ACR settings AUTO.
2) Set mode to RGB (for Topaz Adjust)
3) Topaz Denoise 5. Just a tiny bit
4) Topaz Adjust 4. Lots of adaptive exposure and regions
5) Sharpen central portion with dark nebulae
6) add contrast with curves.

There was so much detail outside the centre region that I decided not to crop

The result at 50%

Uranium, thanks for sharing your data and allowing us to give it a try.

I used only levels and curves with photoshop and also a layer mask to try not to blow the core, then i used  high pass filter.

Okay, i'm going to show my mediocre try...

Gimp 2.9: import, convert to 64 bit fp, manual adaption of curves (about 10 times), export. That's all.

Since I'm need of some processing practice with NB.... here's my attempt. The workflow was: Deconvolution in CCDstack; DDP in CCDstack;  Smartsharpen (excluding stars via PS Mask); Reduce Noise I; HPF I (small radius); HPF II (large radius); Reduce Noise II. I used PS object masks throughout to limit the particular action to only certain points of the image.
