Baader solar film filter combined w/ Baader H-alpha?

Hi all,

after reading through SGL, i decided to get a full aperture 200mm baader film-based filter for sun observations (and doubling the theoretical observation time! :) ). I was wondering whether combining the solar film for removing all excess energy plus adding a standrad 2" H-Alpha filter would make sense? Or am i missing something? NOTE : NEVER POINT A SCOPE AT THE SUN WITHOUT HAVING MOUNTED AN APPROPRIATE SUN PROTECTION FILTER IT WOULD IMMEDIATELY DESTROY YOUR EYES!

The Baader solar film blocks about 99.999% of the light, including the Ha wavelengths, so adding a Ha filter would not give you views of the sun in Ha.  You will need a dedicated solar telescope for that.

As above, when you look in white light with a baader film filter you look straight through the chromosphere HA layer as it is so faint.

Ha filters are designed mainly as imaging filters for night time objects or sometimes as ERF's along with other filters of course.

A standard, deep-sky oriented H-alpha filter has a pass band of between 3 and 35 nm (or thereabouts). A typical H-alpha filter for solar work has a pass-band of 0.1 nm or less. Mine are 0.07nm, 0.05nm and 0.03nm respectively. Only then can you tune onto that part of the spectrum where the chromosphere absorbs most of the light of the photosphere. You can get filters to attach to your scope (like the DayStar Quark), possibly with a front-mounted energy rejection filter, which blocks most light but passes most H-alpha

I think from the framing of your question you already get this but just to be sure, please do not use a standard Ha filter on its own to view the sun as it is not designed for that purpose and will damage your telescope or your eyes.

Well... it Would surely and immediately kill both eyes and scope :/ yep i know, but its probably good to mention it in this thread... thanks for stressing this... i added a security advice to my first post.

Rephrase the question:

Would adding a DSO Ha filter behind the Baader Solar Screen improve the view of the Sun in white light??

It is suggested that adding a Continuum filter (green) improves the visual contrast of solar Photospheric features. Other available filters to the amateur have been tried - blue/ green/ red/ LP etc. Depending on the seeing conditions some can give improvements (Red/ Ha) others don't seem to add much detail.

That's for sure. I once absolutely stupidly was looking for the sun without a solar filter and then it appeared. It was terrifying, it was amazingly bright and extremely hot. I only managed to look at it very quickly, but it was enough to make my eye hurt with intense pain for the rest of the day. Luckily, everything is alright now. Complete stupidity from me.

      Hi folks,
      I've been seeing tear drop shape stars with the EdgeHd 8 and ZWO ASI294MC Pro camera, so I verified the collimation. I'm using a celestron x0.7 reducer.
      Does collimation needs to be checked  with an eyepiece or with the camera and with or without reducer? I'm asking since I verified my collimation yesterday and couldn't see the concentric rings with the complete imaging train (ASI294MC, OAG, and x0.7 reducer). It was only showing the inner shadow and outer circle. I than  replaced the AS294MC with my guide cam (ASI120) which has a much smaller sensor and could see many rings. While, to my view, it seems to be collimated, it's strange that I can't see the rings with the main imaging cam. Any thoughts? Here's how I left the collimation after some adjustments with the guide cam.

      I'm brand new to the forum and new to Astro. I've been loving it since January and learnt a huge amount by myself with the help of forums like these.
      I recently purchased an iOptron 10" RC truss. 3" focuser with a 2" compression. I have been using a WO FLT 132 before this which is little more forgiving. I have attached a couple of pictures from my first attempts. I am not using a field flattener at this point. (just getting used to collimating and setting up). Camera ZWO ASI 6200 MC cooled camera. The images below are composed of 50 x 5 minute subs stacked in pixinsight with basic image processing. I'm using PHD II and a WO guidestar 61 and ASI 120 for guiding on a CEM60EC mount. Drift alignment in PHD 2. Any ideas as to the main causes of egg shaped stars? Could this be sensor tilt? crappy guiding? Focus also looks off? Any help appreciated please

      as well today the sun is shining brightly here. I set up the Lunt to have a look at it, at first just for observing. However, somehow I cannot resist and have to do a sketch This time I've chosen reddish pastels on grey paper to better catch the color of the view in the eyepiece.

      Telescope: Lunt LS50THaB600PT
      Eyepiece: Celestron X-cel 10mm
      Date & Time: May 15th, 2020 / 1400-1430 CEST
      Location: home terrace, Dusseldorf region, Germany
      Technique: red and orange Koh-i-Noor pastels and pastel pens on grey Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper

      So on Tuesday night I spent the evening imaging the moon with my Celestron 9.25 SCT and DSLR as shown below and am happy with the images I collated (I only took images as I did intend to take capture video but I got carried away and time was getting on).
      I have approx 350 jpeg (and the equivalent in raw) images and have used the Microsoft image composite editor to stitch the frames together without editing them first etc but I wonder if I'm going the images an injustice?
      I'm not ready to pay for editing software as I know there is a lot of very good free downloads out there and I'm asking for recommendations. Should I be processing the frames before/after stitching and what software would you recommend? Please offer any advice you have.
      I will post the resulting image once I'm happy with the outcome 😁
