Radio Astronomy - Beginner Advice Appreciated

Recommended Posts

Hi

So i have been an avid DSO Imager for quite a few years, due to a recent change in circumstances this is no longer an option, so what about Radio Astronomy

From what I have read It can allow you (with the right kit and knowledge) to

Meteor Detection
Study Jupiter's noise storms.
Study the Sun
Detect a pulsar using DSP
Look for HEPs (high energy pulses} from the galactic center.

and im sure there is more - I do however have some restrictions I think based on Location and space for Antenna \ Dish

So I live in Croydon, in a fairy built up residential area
Outside space available is 8m by 4m behind the Flat and 6m by 4m at the side
I cannot attach anything to the property so it will need to be free standing dish or something

Finance is not an issue nor is the technical side or indeed time

Initial thoughts would be really appreciated

Hi John, I have looked at this from time to time mainly driven by the weather. It quite a specialist area and I would recommend you joined the BAA's radio astronomy section to get there input.

Hi John

Meteor detection is relatively straight forward and need not be too expensive; it's worth looking at this thread: https://stargazerslounge.com/topic/220150-new-to-meteor-detecting/

I've not done any radio astronomy, but I've come across a few links that might be of interest. Have a look here: http://www.dmradas.co.uk/Downloads.html

As Andrew says, I guess the BAA's Radio Astronomy section would also be a good source. In fact, having just checked I see that there is a lot of good stuff downloadable from their website http://www.britastro.org/radio/downloads.html
