A rather like the last suggestion: a cluster. A really large gathering would then be a super cluster. A "gaze" is also nice, but doesn't apply under cloudy skies, it then becomes a "mope" or "sulk" of astronomers

I reckon "Agglomeration" as in a confused mass .

Or (Chemical Engineering: Operations, Solid-solid operations) An agglomerate is a group of particles which are loosely attached. Collins definition.

Well, in Yorkshire its an 'Owmuch' (not restricted to Astronomers).  In Nottingham it should be a 'Meduck'.  In case anyone is wondering I was born in Mansfield.
