Would you observe with these!

Just been reading some news reports about the transit of Mercury that also included images of people observing it and the methods they used, it included this image  , would you use these,

Nope, not unless I wanted to risk not seeing anything ever again. The filters look a bit slapdash to me, not the sort of thing to be lazy about.

And here was me thinking my astro DIY skills sucked. Not a chance in hell would i put those things anywhere near my eyes. You could park a bus in the gaps on those. I agree that they look like they are made from tinfoil.

I actually saw Mercury in my 9x50 finder so it's perhaps more easily seen than expected. Still wouldn't use those bins though!! ??

I didn't say it couldn't  be seen, I said it was too small.....for me anyway.

Fair enough, but if that's all you've got, better to see it than not in my book. The real issue is about making sure it's done safely and that can be with binoculars or a scope.
