Backlash in EQ5 Dec

I've been trying to adjust the DEC axis in my eq5 to remove backlash. Its fine in the RA axis no play at all and a very smooth action, but with the DEC I can't seem to remove the backlash without the axis becoming to stiff. At that point the motors stall at around 500x sidereal when slewing. Does anyone have any advice?
