The size of the connector that goes into the mount,  should be  2.3mm not 2.1mm. That could be a lot of what of  what your  problems are.

The 2.1 mm form the booster cable fitted perfectly. Are you sure its 2.3?

Just found this on the SGL site . The Sky Watcher mount is 2.1mm. I stand corrected. On my CG-5 it is 2.3mm.

Also there are different sizes of connector, in particular two that look fairly similar (5.5/2.5 and 5.5/2.1) which look fairly similar and may even "feel right" but which if you use the one with the larger hole with the smaller central "spike" you will get an intermittent contact, or none at all.

Does this explain things a bit more, what might be happening.

The Skywatcher mount uses a 2.1mm plug. That usb lead cannot provide sufficient amps to drive the mount.

I still think it is down to supply current limitation. Hopefully that is all. If it is tested with a suitable power supply be it battery or mains I am sure the answer will be evident.

Thanks for the replies.

So does that amazon one look good? Should I get that one and then wait a bit for a power bank? I've got an 8m extension cable so I can use that for going into the garden.

Thanks again,

Seb

Somewhat late to the party, but anyways:

I power my SW EQ3 Pro from either a power adapter 12V 2.25 A or from a lead battery without any problem

Link to a battery similar to mine:

The battery lasts a few imaging nights. My problem was more the battery in the camera than the one driving the mount.

Cheers
