March 14, 2016, 11:21 p.m. EDT report from the United States, Macon, Georgia:

Io and Europa began their transit of Jupiter at about 10:23 p.m. EDT and will completely transit around 12:30 a.m. EDT! Cool shadows and everything! If you get this notification in time, take a look or get a quick image! I'm not currently set up to image so I'm going back out under the stars with my scope for some more observing now!:headbang:

Clear skies!

I caught the tail end of the event by accident last night.  One of the moons had just cleared the western limb, and the other was a tiny white disk, closely followed by its shadow, just about to pass off the western limb.  Add a well placed GRS to the mix, and it was quite a splendid sight.

That's the funny part about it; I also caught the event by accident. Everyone was prepared for the first double transit earlier this month (which I missed due to cloudy skies). This one I found out about using Starry Night to figure out which Galilean satellites I could see that night, and BINGO! Another double transit! I viewed the event through my Orion 127 Mak-Cass (didn't feel like hauling out the big 180) and was able to see one of the shadows. It was hard to see the satellites against the bright orb of Jupiter. I couldn't stay out as late as I wanted to because of work, but it was an exciting period of time and, yes, quite a splendid sight!

Hi Reggie -

Sure wish I could 'get lucky' and find that waiting for me! Instead our un-ending performance of clouds is still in attendance up here. Weather's getting warm out at least. A lousy swap in my book.

In that you had to find which moon is which, it appears you haven't found one of my links I've been dropping off around the forum. So it's your turn: This is Jupiter2 from France. It'll put a link on your desktop for your convienence. It will show you whih moon is what, at any time you wish. As well as the location of the GRS - Great Red Spot. Oldest hurricane of record. Here you be - Free of course:

http://astrosurf.com/rondi/jupiter/

You'll find the download link in there. My 'first-light' with my 127mm F/9.3 refractor was on Jupiter. The moon's shadow (Io) was a perfectly formed little black BB superimposed beautifully on the clouds. It was my best view ever that night. Words don't reach the majesty of the sight.

Enjoy -

Dave

Thanks, Dave. I'm always hot on Jupiter's moons around opposition time. I hope those clouds you're dealing with move out, soon. We're supposed to get some this weekend (sigh) but I'm having one heck of a mid-week:happy6:
