Upgrade possibilities/suggestions/help please

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm currently thinking of upgrading my AP kit. Currently I have:

Meade LX90 8"
Orion ST 80 (intended as a guide scope but sometime I swap purposes)
Xagyl 8 pos filter wheel
Atik 314L+ imaging camera
ZWO asi120mc guide and planetary camera

I have never got good tracking with the LX90 and suspect that it's down to the weight that I now have on it and that the LX90 was really only intended to be used as a visual platform.

My initial thoughts were to get the Skywatcher AZ EQ6-GT GEQ & Alt-Az Mount as I believe that this should cope with the weight. I would go for the EQ8 but I need to be able to pack it all away fairly easily and I would like the option to be able to take it to a dark site at some point without getting a hernia. Plus if the wife found out how expensive the EQ8 was I would probably end up with a new pair of earrings

Then I would de-fork the LX90 OTA and mount it and the ST80 side by side on the EQ6. That way I can change scopes etc. more easily. This seems the best option in the short term as I can re-fork the LX90 when I want to upgrade the OTA. But do you think the EQ6 would cope with that kind of weight for AP?

However another option has come to light as one of my colleagues is interested in buying my old LX90. This opens up the idea that I could sell my old scope and upgrade immediately with out the problems of de-forking. But the question here is what to? I have thought of going a bit mad and risking the wrath of the wife and going for either a Meade 10" OTA (but that pushes the weight on the mount at 14.5Kg just for the OTA). Or going for a Celestron 9.25" Edge HD, both at similar prices but stretching the budget a looooooog  way (a bit too far for comfort if you know what I mean). Alternatively I could just drop on the Celestron 8" Edge HD and get on with life.

Most of my imaging tends to be deep space, but a mix of nebulas and galaxies and I currently need a reducer on the LX90 to get most galaxies framed nicely, so I would probably need a reducer. For the options that I have considered, these seem to be specialist ones for the OTA that cost a small fortune. Unless you know of alternative options or if the existing reducers that I have would work (all be it not perfectly). Likewise are there any other OTA's that are worth considering?

Many food for thought or ideas/suggestions appreciated.
