Hi

I am having to use GIMP  at the moment. Following on from advice Could anyone tell me how to merge layers on to your "final image"

I have being told to make different layer of background colour with no image on it and then slightly blur it and add merge on to the image???

Have i got the wrong end off the stick again?

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but:

I fyou have at least two layers in your image:

In the layer pane, set the appropriate blend Mode (standard is "Normal", but there is a pull down menu)

Then in the Layer menu (main window), select Merge Down.

This will blend the active layer with the layer below, using the mode specified

Hope this helps

If you are blending many layers using "Normal" then you need to set the opacity of the nth layer to 1/n (in percent), as GIMP doesn't have an 'average' blend mode.

So the top layer has 100% then you set subsequent layers as follows

50%, 33.3%, 25%, 20%, 16.67% etc etc

Mathematically you end up with the same as if you had done an average.

Nigel, shouldn't this be the other way around?

If I set the top layer 100 % opacity, this means I can't see the layers underneath at all.

I tested with this:

1st (bottom) layer 100% filled with red only

2nd layer 50% filled with green only

3rd (top) layer 33% filled with blue only.

Blended using "Normal" gave me a mid-gray image, as expected.

Setting top layer 100% opacity, resulted in a blue image (lower layers don't show at all).

(Note that none of my layers had an alpha channel.)
