Abingdon Astronomical Society

Recommended Posts

Hey

Does anybody go to the Abingdon Astronomical Society? As i`m thinking off joining and wanted to know whether it is worth it or not.Plus i was going by bus from Oxford city centre and wanted to know where`s the nearest bus stop to it.

Cheers for any help.

I went to one of their talks. Assuming public transport is still running, The Oxford bus service USED to stop right at the end of the road, leading onto an estate. The "church hall" meeting room is then, just "past the church", and around the corner to the right? As ever, using PUBLIC transport to get home might be a challenge in these parts? :D

And they have a join-able Yahoo group too...

I am a member of Abingdon A/S and go regularly. They run a beginners meeting and a normal meeting. As with any society it will depend on your interests as to whether any given talk or meeting will interest you. As noted though it may be difficult to get back in to Oxford at night, although several members come from there and might be willing to give you a lift back

I attended a lecture organized by AAS last night, Prof Binney on The Milky Way. It was very well attended, the room was full, and I enjoyed it very much. I also took the opportunity to join the Society. Carl, let me know if you want a lift there anytime, I'm in Iffley.

AAS is well worth going to -- I've been to a beginner's meeting, an observing evening and a regular meeting -- enjoyed all of them. If you're thinking of going to Mon 15 Dec's beginner's night, I can give you a lift if Themos can't make it for any reason. There's usually a post-meet at the pub afterwards -- great for asking questions.
