What might I be able to see

Recommended Posts

Hello to all.

I am new to this fascinating hobby. I have just purchased a Sky Watcher star discovery 150mm synscan goto. I also have a reasonable number of lenses eg barlows plossl plus a Baader q turret eyepiece set

I wonder if any members could tell me what I might be able to see through this scope. I realise that a number of factors will dictate what can be seen, but a rough guide would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Welcome to SGL...

Lots! Obvious things like craters and lunar features. The moons of Jupiter and major bands acrosss its surface. Saturn and its rings. Plus lots of DSO's.

If you are new get a copy of Turn Left at Orion. It is good reading and the illustrations show various objects as they would be seen in a 'scope like your and not Hubble type images.

You could also read this thread to help you find what's up and about, and my post in it on Stellarium - a very good piece of FREE software. Could save you £200:

You are going to love it!! I have a 150p Dob and have seen some fantastic views with my own eyes. The advice above should set you in the right direction. Stellarium is great as is Sky Safari - I use both on my iPad. Planets is another great app so you can see when planets will be visible at a glance - and 5 of them are at the moment!!

Good hunting :)

Hi.

A useful tool is  synscanlnit 2  for smartphones. It gives you the gps setup you need for positioning mount all on one page. ie.... date, time, dls, gps position

downloaded free from playstore.

Enjoy your scope.

Nige.

I have the same scope and love it! as for what you will see out of it then the best advice I can give is to go out and try for yourself!!
