A good starting point would be to download Stellarium to your PC - A free planetarium programme that will help you navigate the night sky. You may also like to do a google search of local astro clubs and see if there's anything close to you so you could go and meet up with some astro folks

As a starter get a copy of Turn Left at Orion. An excellent book for new starters and shows the objects as they should be seen in binoculars, a small scope and something like an 8'' dob.
