Fascinating article. It's such a shame that in addition to all the conflict they have to endure they are not able to enjoy their harmless hobby and view their amazing dark skies. Makes me think I should be donating to Astronomy without Borders .......

So sad, and to think of the great Islamic astronomers of the Medieval period, when Europe was pretty much still in the Dark Age!

I doubt things are any better in Syria and Iraq in areas controlled by ISIS. I wouldn't want to have to my hobby to those ignorant scum, although I doubt they'd give me the chance!

Very interesting article. It does make you appreciate what we often take for granted.

As the article suggests there must be the most amazing dark skies in some locations but clearly its far too dangerous to venture into those areas.

I like that. Bring the simple joy of stargazing to parts of the world where there is conflict and bring hope and joy to those affected.

I'd happily donate a scope or two to the cause.
