The article is 3 years old but there's still 4 billion to go. If there are still people on Earth then, and if they still have the same sort of light pollution that we do, then most people won't notice M31 filling half their sky, same as most people nowadays can't see the Milky Way stretching right across it. But imagers might manage the sort of picture simulated in the NASA article. In any case, it looks like Earth will become uninhabitable within 2 billion years from now, so the only people left to watch the M31/Milky Way merger will be ones whose ancestors could afford a flight to Mars or elsewhere. Wherever the elite go, I expect they'll have very nice imaging toys to play with.
