Yes Simon. Go out, take off the cap, and slide the shield on. It stops dew forming and blocks unwanted light sources. Keep it on through the session.

Great first scope - I wish I was as brave with my first purchase. Stellarium was already mentioned but is brilliant for sorting out a list of targets before you get out int the dark. I like to have a wee star chart handy when I'm out there too. May I suggest a wee google search for a local astro group or society. I found that getting out with people and learning from more experienced stargazers was invaluable. Clear skies
