Warm welcome to the friendliest astro forum around. Congrats on new scope. Let us know what you've got and ask anything. There's a wealth of experience and expertise here. The only thing we can't help with is clear skies!

Happy Christmas and plenty of clear skies in 2016

Happy Xmas and welcome!  The moon is great especially less full than it is right now, that shadow (terminator) as it shifts across during the phases is just stunning.  Remember that the details seen during the waxing phases are not identical to the waning details ! :)

Enjoy

Hi Colmamur

Welcome to SGL and congrats on your first views of the moon. If you think it looks good when it's full, wait until you look at it when it's a half moon or crescent. The lower angle of the Sun on its surface casts deep shadows across craters and mountains and it can look absolutely stunning. One of my favourite activities is gazing down the "terminator" - the dividing line between night and day on the moon - which can show some really interesting details.

Enjoy it.

Paul
