BBC Radio 4 are airing this programme tonight,as part of the 'Archive on 4' series.

It describes how Britain had a dynamic Space Programme in the 1950's and 60's,and how a British rocket put a satellite into orbit by 1971.

Then, because of Government disinterest, the programme was allowed to fizzle out.

Should be interesting- Space travel had a grip on the British public imagination in those days-think 'Dan Dare', 'Journey into Space','Quatermass' et all.

Well,I listened last night.

Some interesting archive material there, including a pre S@N  (Sir ) Patrick Moore ,of the B.A.A., being interviewed in 1956,re manned Space Flight to the Moon and Planets.

Also,The 'Goon Show', Arthur C. Clarke saying that a British Space Programme "would only cost the tax payer a shilling a head"

and my favourite bit- Richard Dimbleby saying that "if we can travel to the Moon, then we'll finally find out whether it has CANALS or not".

Pleased he wasn't doing the navigating!
