Funny how we get used to a certain design and then when we see a design a bit different we think 'why did that never crossed my mind' ? Sliding roof going over the front door ! I always picture the roof rolling to the side of an obsy...

Here's my meagre little roll off shed (not roof). Not as grand as many on here but I bought the timber and built it all myself and anyone who knows me knows I'm no carpenter so I am quite pleased with how it's turned out

Wow thanks it was the result of a lot of YouTube video watching on woodwork and joinery and of course reading every single obsy thread on here! It's been in place since February and has remained watertight so far It has made such a difference to my observing. Now I can grab quick sessions here and there between clouds

Here's a montage of my DIY obsy built two decades ago in my London garden where LP is severe but the dome gives complete protection for me and my Meade 12" SCT.  No EPs used nowadays as my cameras punch through the light-dome with impunity as sample Ring and Bowtie nebulae show.  

The background 10ft DIY dome from the 1970s removed last year and previously contained a 17.3" Newt + smaller scopes on massive forks.

I've driven past an observatory in malton n Yorkshire, main road in from Beverley. Proper dome at the end of someone's garden backing onto the main road, it looks great. Wonder if it is anyone's on SGL??

This is my converted metal shed. The fence is to the south, so I have a good view in that direction. Plenty of light pollution though, especially with the new street lights. After opening the roof and switching on, I control it via remote desktop from the house over mains networking. I then go out and switch off, close the roof when finished or if it gets cloudy.

That is one hell of an installation ! impressive to say the least

What software do you use to have a graphical representation of the mount ? I think I can read on the screen 'virtual mount' but not sure...

Its TheSkyX, used with my MX mount. It has a virtual mount feature so you can get an impression of where the scope is pointing. It also shows my plotted horizon limit (green line). It controls the mount, guider, camera, focuser and filter wheel. The PC is actually the small nettop under the mount, along with a 12V supply for dew heaters and fans.

I have been looking at this and torn on what to build around my pier (space is limited). My biggest concearn is parking the scope to home position, the top of the scope would be quite high up. I have to decide do I   A want a small  wardrobe type shed that can completly roll away from the pier or  B a shed roughly 6ft x 4 ft and a slide off roof,  the slide off roof is doable  but it would need to be prety high to miss the scope at home position..

I see you have a HEQ5. I don't know if you are using EQMOD, but you can specify a custom park position, which may overcome your dilemma. If you are not using EQMOD you are missing out on a fabulous piece of free software.

I should update that I have built a pier out the garden its basically an extention of the patio but at a lower level (about 1ft  lower). I have used EQMOD in the past but got into allsorts of trouble with it burnt out motherboards, handset list is endless, so I steer clear of it now. The more i look at what to do the more i think I have cracked it.  18mm outdoor plywood roughly 1200 mm high one end 1000mm the other end 800mm wide , the lower end will have to be the door and so support will come from two shelves cut out to slot into the pier.  As it happens the site im working on is using cladding sheets with 6 inch insulation so i,m thinking get a sheet about 8 inches wider all round and cut a groove all the way into the insulation so it just slots into the plywood sides, it should just be a matter of securing it with locks etc then and i got 50mm insulation boards to line the inside. maybe a few vents

EDIT bottom shelve would have castors on it so i can just wheel it clear prob on runners

managed to take a photo to show what I mean, something along the lines of a wardrobe type thing. I think if i do it 1200x1000 i shoud have 1560 ish on the diag which is  the same direction of the scope
