Observing Auriga.

Capella , the sixth brightest star, heralds the rise of the wonderful kite of Auriga . On the galactic plane, there are clusters galore. I caught these and noted some targets,

NGC 1664, the "kite" cluster, indeed kite on a line at x50.

In nearby Perseus, these few are worth finding,

NGC 1545, a pair of eyes and spidery legs.

NGC 1528, three sweeping arcs.

NGC 1342, arched figure.

One in Orion, NGC 1662, lovely "E" to one side.

Back to Auriga,

NGC 1857 ,scattered, but nice groups.

NGC 2126, scattered and depleted.

NGC 2281, sparse , but group to one side.

NGC 1907, edge of M38, good star cloud.

NGC 1931, scattered triangles. Faintly nebulous, due to IC 417, look for four "Trap" stars here.

NGC 1778, dainty doubles here. Letter c and a chain.

M38 (NGC 1912) glorious, spot the giant Cheshire Cat grin to one side in low power binoculars.

M37 ( NGC 2099), my favourite here, right up to x150.

M36 ( NGC 1960), lovely.

NGC 1790 , I have down as an asterism.

There's also Collinder 62 here at 05h 22.5m. +41.00.00

Some nebulae here,

IC 405 , the "flaming star"

IC 410 with NGC 1893.

NGC 1985, the brightest emission here.

For planetary nebulae,

IC 2149 (+10.6)

Galaxies for searchers,

NGC 2303 (+14)

NGC 2208 (+14)

Stars.

Take note of the fabulous eclipsing binary , ε Aurigae. The massive pair of ζ Aurigae.

Some multiples here,

59 Aurigae (SAO 059571), cone of stars including 60 and 61.Caught at x50.

14 Aurigae (SAO 057799), yellow and blue , quite challenging.

Bogardus (θ Aurigae) , a quadruple system. Challenging split due to the close 3.8" +7.2 companion to the +2.7 primary. I picked the group up at x130.

Σ 644 , beautiful bright pair with 1.6" separation. Near NGC 1778.

ΟΣ147 with Σ928 , a lovely view at x100.

56 Aurigae, 41 ,26 and 5 , all give pleasant views.

A deep red carbon star is UUAurigae , SAO 59280.

A lot to observe here as winter rolls on , under

Clear skies !

Nick.

Nice report! Looking at the position of the sky last night, it seems to be rising high enough for evening observers. I've got a list going but didn't have the chance to get out the scope. If memory serves, ΟΣ147 with Σ928 are on that list for sure!
