Norman Lockyer Observatory

Recommended Posts

I attended the BAA spectroscopy workshop this Saturday at the Norman Lockyer Observatory outside Sidmouth in Devon. What a place! They have a series of domes with some serious machinery. Here are some quick phone pictures which simply don't do this place justice. The spectro day was great as well, very glad I managed to drag myself out of bed early from Essex to get down there.

I had the pleasure of NLO yesterday too. I love looking at the scopes too and thanks for sharing your photos. The facilities at NLO are fantastic and I think it's wonderful that amateurs can have access to something like this. It's a lovely mix of the best of 19th century astronomy as well as leading from the front with regard to what amateur astronomy is capable of today, to the extent of contributing to professional research.

Yesterday was my 3rd visit , the personnel are very friendly and knowledgable so I'm just looking forward to my 4th outing.

I found it rather funny that with all the epically long finder scopes, there were still Telrads attached to them all. My telrad looks pretty big on my 10" scope, but just looks like a minor afterthought on these monsters.

Nice to see some other spectroscopic members on here. I went along to the day with the hope it would kickstart my spectroscopy, and I can happily say it has certainly done that. I am now determined to use the StarAnalyser I have in a neglected part of my filter wheel.
