They will indeed although we generally snigger for about twenty minutes before the guilt kicks in.

How many astronomers does it take to put up a tent?

One to polar align it.

One to hand out the single malt.

One to "manage" the cakes

One to make sure the tent isn't positioned over a black hole.

One to fit the Kochabs clock

One to make sure it's balanced correctly

One to actually build it.

Any advance on 7 !!

One to sit there lamenting that the roof of the tent will spoil the view of the night sky.

One to point sit on a chair critiqing the quality of the build of the tent as it is going up.  Normally pointing out design errors in the part that has just been put up and describing in great detail how the design could be "improved".

One to stand nearby complaining how the critque is incorrect and that an alternative approach should be taken.

One argue with both of the above about how the approach actually taken is superior.  (If it really was inferior the argument should be all the more passionate)

One to stand by pointing and giggling at anything and everything.

What's the etiquette for arriving after dark?

I'll be heading up on the Friday after work and I'm planning on getting there before nightfall but just in case of traffic or delays at work I'd like to know what I should do if it's dark and clear when I get there.

(I'm tenting it up in Hare)

Cheers

Most people who don't live close to Hereford tend to take the day/afternoon off to make sure they arrive well before it gets dark.  If you arrive late due to circumstances beyond your control, the normal procedure is to park up at the entrance to the site (by the cafe/reception) and walk down to the far end of the site where SGL is based. Find one of the SGL Admin/Mod team and find out if observing is likely to happen that evening.  If it's completely clouded out, then you should be okay to drive down and pitch up - but you should check with one of the Mod team first.  If it's a clear night, then you would have to drive down with no lights on, turn off your car's internal lights and put up your tent using only a dim red light (including inside the tent).  If you arrive late and start using a white light torch/headlights and it's an observing night, you'll probably hack off everyone at the camp.

In the past, some people who arrived late have either booked into a local hotel/B&B, and pitched up their tent in the morning.  A couple of people have slept in their cars (not recommended - especially in early March!).

Moral of the story - make sure you leave home with plenty of time to allow for delays and for the time taken to pitch and set up your tent.

Most people didn't have a 4 week honeymoon this year and so are completely out of holiday!  Like I said... I'll try to get there well before sunset, and if not, will park up at the entrance first and check it out.

Just get there when you get there.  And the rest will get sorted out as needed.  If you are "lucky" it'll be clouded out if you arrive after dark, so you'll be able to drive in and get pitched.  Then if you are really lucky, the sky will clear and everyone will have a great night.  Isn't wishful thinking great?

It won't be the last time that wedded blis gets in the way of your astronomy. ?

There will be people around to help. I'm not sure if the organisers do the escorting cars down with red lights.

Also, there might be someone with space in their tent for you to bed down and put the tent up in the morning? Mine is a one person effort covered in flowers (don't ask), so possibly not the best bet!

Hi Craig

Sorry if I came across as a bit harsh, but almost every year we get someone turning up really late one night and trying to use a 1,000,000 candle power searchlight to put up the tent and it always seems to be right next to me!  :hmh:

Hello Paul

I still have a picture of your tent if you have forget what it looks like?

By the way Paul I bought a secondhand Lodestar X2 Mono from Kerry a year ago and only used it twice as yet, so if you would like a poor demo on it, I am the one to ask, ha, ha..

Best regards,

Hadyn

It's England v Wales rugby on the Saturday. Can anyone remember if there is a telly in the caff? If not,  I'll have to bring my dongle and aerial for the laptop!

Yes, there is. Or at least there was last year.
