What do people use to stitch images together?

I took photos for a mosaic of the milky way from horizon to horizon last night and I've heard of people using a program that automatically stitches photos together for panoramics like this. Can anyone tell me what this is?

i use microsofts ICE free to download and photoshops cc photomerge. clear skys charl.

This depends on the data, AFAIK. I use AutoStitch for most of my solar work, but tend to use Microsoft ICE for lunar. I know PixInsight can stitch mosaics, but have never used it

Just tried autostitch, it didn't exactly do what I'd expected. (curved the milky way over and put parts of images off the side, not very attractive.

I'll try ICE, if that doesn't work, I'll have to do it manually.

You could also try Huggin. It's not specifically for astro work, but it makes a very good job of landscapes.

For things with a horizon in, I use either Microsoft ICE or the Photomerge tool in Photoshop. For just star fields or DSO mosaics I use Registar.

Hmmm, microsoft ICE doesn't seem to notice that my camera rotated 180 degrees when i reached the zenith... The milky way flips backwards.

Maybe I ought to do it myself...

I'm just throwing everything at Photoshop CC.  Will start looking at other options when I find something that it can't do.  Mind you, I do like to know what is going on under the hood.

I tried ICE once and couldnt work it out at all, kept saying cant align (or something like that) I,m sure theres a way round it but didnt have the time to look into it, which is a shame as I love landscape astro shots

With large mosaics (of which Tom and I have had recent experience  ) the big problem is defining the field curvature. Chucking things into an auto programme is not going to tell that programme what the is the field geometry. Going over the zenith is asking a lot.

Because we do a lot of this stuff here we have a variety of approaches and for your situation I'd be thinking about Auto Pano Pro.

Best would be PTGUI based on some free tools.

Freeware Hugin is very good but one needs to spend time to learn the app.

Or Autopano is excellent to detect n stick.

I know how to stitch using PTGUI.

Hugin is good too n If used properly one can rid the coma errors

Give a free program called iMerge a try - I use it a lot for Lunar mosaic stitching and have had some good results with it.
