Hello. 

My name is Kirsty. I have signed up because my son is mad about space. 

He is only 5 years old but knows more than me about what is up in space and is constantly teaching me new things.

I have signed up as my son keeps going on about going stargazing but I haven't the foggiest where to begin looking at how to make this possible for him. 

I don't know what I am supposed to be looking for and would really like some advice so I can make my sons dream and passion come true. 

If anyone could give me some advice or somewhere to take him to get an expert (or someone that knows what they are talking about) to talk to him and show him the night sky, I would be so grateful.

Warm welcome to SGL. Download a planetarium program plenty out there but try Stellarium, its great and free to be found here :-- http://www.stellarium.org/

This will show you whats in the sky to see and help you learn the constellations. I would advise before spending cash to find your local astro group and go along to one of their meets and see what kit they have and what might suit your son. For a starter would normally say binos, but any size he might find difficult to use.

You are not far away from Tring astro (c20miles) and they have lots of kit and are very knowledgeable as well as having coffee at the ready.  :--- http://www.tringastro.co.uk/

Hi Kirsty and welcome to SGL - Perhaps if you do a google search you will find some local astro groups to you. You could go along and have a chat with some folks there and see what they suggest for a 5 yr old. I'm sure that there will be people in clubs with good ideas.

I went onto the tringastro website and found a group in letchworth. So thank you very much for the website link

Thats great, the people in the shop are brilliant, really knowledgeable and loads of stock. A 130p dob or 150p would be a great start, but they should have them for you to play with.. But do go along to your group at Letchworth, they will be dead keen at having a potential young starter!.

Hi Kirsty and welcome to the forum.  Some helpful advice from Damian which is indicative of this forum as a whole as we a re here to help you and your son get started. Astronomy isn't difficult but there is a lot of it which can be a good thing as you are sure to find something that will be of interest to you. The stars aren't going anywhere soon so there isn't any real need to get some some kit in the short term, just sit back and enjoy the ride and ask as many questions as you like in the relevant sections when the need arises.

Hi kirsty, welcome to SGL to you and your Son, as has been said, finding a local Astronomy group is your first step. Your Son is obviously engrossed in all things Astronomical, a subject which you may have little, or no knowledge at all. With your Sons enthusiasm this is likely to change, join with him and enjoy the world that lies at night above our heads.

At the tender age of 5, your Son is going to need a guiding hand and your support, the forum can be of much service to you here, just ask for advice or make any inquiry in the relevant sections, for guidance on anything you do not understand.

Equipment should not be an issue at this stage, and please, do not be tempted to invest in "The best telescope ever for the young budding Astronomer"  from the big general retail outlets, you may well be disappointed and you Son disillusioned at best. Astronomers deal with companies who specialise in astronomical and optical products such as FLO, see top of the page.
