Hi From Berkshire

Hi All,

I have aways wanted to start exploring the sky and now have the time to start. I have never owned a telescope so the first thing I will be looking into is what is a good one to start with on a budget of £200. I have read so many articles that I think I have totally confused myself. Any advice would be very welcome. My wife also wants to get involved.

Hi Les and welcome to SGL - There's a good article on beginners scopes on the FLO website - Here you go http://www.firstlightoptics.com/beginner-telescopes.html

I don't do visual so can't help I'm afraid. If you don't get many responses here about a starter scope then ask the question in the beginners forum as opposed to the welcome forum..... you'll probably get more responses there.

Look forward to seeing you around :)

Hi Les,

Warm welcome to SGL. The same scope above is £175 from jessops (I am sure FLO would price match).. Also download a planetarium program. Lots out there but try stellarium its great and free, to be found here :--- http://www.stellarium.org/.. Also a couple of books to help are 'turn left at orion' and 'sky&telescope pocket star atlas' . These will help guide you round the sky.

I would also recommend finding your nearest astro club and have a look at what others have and what may suit you best.

HI Les and welcome to SGL, it is worth doing some research before making any decision on scope buying, deciding what you and your Wife really want to observe in the night sky, if it is everything in general, regretfully there is no one scope that can cover all aspects.

By reading reports and reviews from newcomers, who have bought equipment, you will soon have an idea of what is most popular and this could lie with the Dobsonian range, the scope that probably gives you the best bang for your buck. Enjoy your Astronomy and the forum :)
