Hi Valerie,

Warm welcome to SGL. I would say find your local astro group and go along to one of their meets and see what others have and what might suit you best. A lot of folk start off with a pair of binos and a star map. Download a planetarium program, plenty out there but try stellarium its great and free to be found here ;-- http://www.stellarium.org/  . A couple of books to help you learn the sky are 'turn left at orion' and 'sky&telescope pocket star atlas'..

Welcome to SGL Valerie...

I've always found this bunch of reprobates (  ) are always very forthcoming with help and advice so you're in the right place.

May clear skies follow you around..

Welcome, Valerie.

Main thing is to have fun with your new interest - and there's plenty to be had.

Reprobates indeed! Mods! Do have a word with the above rascal, please.

Hi Valerie, welcome to SGL!

What's your equipment? If you've purchased a scope yet of course, when you're able to edit your profile and can include a "signature " it would help a great deal by including your scope details in the signature( which will appear at the bottom of every post you make.) This makes it easier for people to help out with any questions you may have by knowing your equipment upfront, saves you having to repeat yourself often

Hi Valerie and welcome to the forum. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions (....no such thing as a daft question) as we are her to help you.

Clear skies and hope you enjoy the forum.
