OIII

so has any of you guys or gals had experience with an OIII filter?

i've heard good things about them as i have about the skyglow filters. my area suffers from a bit of skyglow, and most galaxy's are almost unobservable. so i was wondering what your opinions on these two filters are.

scope details in sig.

Almost certainly an OIII won't do you any favours on galaxies.

However, they certainly do a good job on targets emitting OIII like planetary nebulae, and thus are not general purpose but rather specialised.

I had an excellent view of m42 with an OIII. This website gives you a great idea of what targets particular filters work best on. The UHC is shown to be the best all-round filter.

For galaxies, consider a CLS or LPR filter. CLSs are proven to do an excellent job of cutting light pollution.

Be aware that the OIII and UHC filters work by only letting specific narrow parts of the visible light through - so with a 130mm scope so much light can be blocked that the object you want to see is not better and sometime looks worse.

Try getting a s/h light pollution filter to try first before spending a lot on a OIII (or UHC) filter.
