+1 in favor of checking the scope for damage - you never know and your wife wouldn't want you to be disappointed on your birthday! Great strategy to sneek a peek if pursued via "the logical approach" Then once you get your hands on it you could mention how complicated it all looks and that it sure would be nice to learn all the "confusing" stuff ahead of time so you' can actually use it on your birthday. At least grab the manual and read it through a couple of times which really will help - no joke.

Ive downloaded Stellarium and now have a copy of Turn Left at Orion and they look like they'll definetly useful. The only pity is the southern hemisphere chapter is small
