Anyone know what this is?

Hello,

I have an astronomy item that my dad got off my uncle. They must of had it in the 60s when they did astronomy. It is large, and when you twiddle the knob it moves up and down. Came with some bits which may or may not be related.

So does anyone know anything about it?

Thanks

I wonder if it is some sort of projection lens.  It looks like something is intended to be inserted through the slot in the side into the runners in front of the runners at the end opposite to the flange.

I was going to suggest that ...

Try a couple of cardboard boxes that slide like an old drawtube 'scope with a piece of tracing paper taped over one end to form a focus screen and the hole in the other , this will get you an idea of the focal length before making a solid structure.

I'd be happy to help out knocking up the box for it .

My first reaction was a 'magic lantern' such as my grandfather had .

he had an impressive array of temperance slides that he used to show us grandchildren

to teach us about the 'demon drink'

had no effect though I still enjoy a pint or two

I've found an old photo that I can scale from , hope you've got a strong back and a big garden ...  :p

That's a monster!  Was there any indication with the photograph of why they needed something that big?
