Spotted this last night

I spotted this last night as i was star hopping a star cluster and a smudge mark by the side I live in brighton and pointed my telescope to the north east is the smudge mark a glaxy

What was the time and elevation? Brief look on Sky Safari shows M13 low down in the NE at 11.30 last night, but that pattern of five stars isn't one I've noticed when looking at M13, which looks circular in any case.

Was your blob elliptical as drawn?

Just like a smudge mark it was about 9.30 evenig juptier was not far from it

I suspect the star cluster was Praesepe, there are lots of galaxies to the NE of it.

What size scope were you using ??

Would suggest you download Stellarium - it's free - it may help you

Close to Jupiter? @ 9.30 last night that would have been South East, not NE

So, M44 (Praesepe, Beehive) may well have been what you saw...Google M44 images, see if that cluster matches ( it's pretty distinctive having a central square 'hive' surmounted by a pretty little triangle of stars*. Lots of doubles in the cluster too).

*edit/ a little like your drawing of those five stars in fact. Tho I've not seen a galaxy-like object in the Beehive itself.

Looks like it had a look at some pictures and on Google and its the same as what i saw well happy so the bee hive cluster thanks for your help
