Rebuild of HEQ5 Pro

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Going to go for a rebuild of my HEQ5 pro mount. Looking to probably buy the belt mod at the same time. Also I have read it's possible to upgrade the bearings, in particular the worm gear bearing. Does any one have any details on the bearings that can be replaced ? -  and am I right to assume the RA and DEC assemblies are much the same. Going to be following AstoBabies details for much of this I expect. Any other tips much appreciated.

Thanks

Alistair

Those are the numbers you quote to any bearing supplier.

689 2ZZ      2ZZ is 2 metal shields

6006 2RS   2RS is two rubber seals

The taper roller is just 30205  no shields on those

There are quite a few on the net like Simply Bearings or Bearing King just do a google for bearings and take your pick.

What I would do is take the mount apart and see if any are rough then just replace those.

When I did mine two of the 6006 were very rough but I replaced the lot.

Ah ok, thanks Mike. I've made a note and will keep the bearings in mind. My heq5 is only just over a year old but I've never had great performance out of it despite doing Astrobaby's stripdown (well, most of it). I'll see how I get on with the belt mod and take it from there, I think :)

Cheers

The belt mod is worth doing imo, certainly makes the mount nice and quiet.

I'm not bothered about noise but hope the tracking and guiding is improved (no backlash). I'm not sure how much the worm gears contribute (other than periodic error)?

I suppose I'll find out once I fit the belt mod - if Glasgow ever gets clear skies again!

The bearings that need replacing the most I have found is the small ones on the end of the worm roller shafts.  The main bearings in most mounts I have worked with are as good as any.  I would have to consult my notes to see which ones they were.  Strangely I didn't put it on the guide so if anyone can say with certainty what types and quantities they are it would be good.

  • 1 month later...

I have had problems with 'stiction' on my HEQ5 over the winter and now that we don't have any real darkness for a few months I have used Astro Babys excellent guide to strip the mount completely and replace the bearings.

In case anyone else is wanting to do the same the bearings you will need are

6 x 55x30x13

Budget option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p170133/6006ZZ+Budget+Metal+Shielded+Deep+Groove+Ball+Bearing+30x55x13mm/product_info.html    £3.03 each plus VAT

Quality option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p6858/SKF+60062Z+Metal+Shielded+Deep+Groove+Ball+Bearing+30x55x13mm/product_info.html     £5.52 each plus VAT

4 x 17x9x5

Budget option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p170667/689ZZ+Budget+Metal+Shielded+Deep+Groove+Ball+bearing+9x17x5mm/product_info.html     £2.20 each plus VAT

Quality option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p6754/SKF+628/92Z+Metal+Shielded+Deep+Groove+Ball+Bearing+9x17x5mm/product_info.html     £15.38 each plus VAT

2 x 52x25x16.25

Budget option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p503111/30205+Premier+Budget+Metric+Single+Row+Taper+Roller+Bearing+25x52x16.25mm/product_info.html    £4.58 each plus VAT

Quality option - http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p14781/SKF+30205J2Q+Metric+Single+Row+Taper+Roller+Bearing+25x52x16.25mm/product_info.html     £10.99 each plus VAT

So the budget option is £43.00 inc VAT and the quality option is £139.94 inc VAT - carriage is free within the UK.

I have no connection whatsoever to Simply Bearings except that I use them for bearings for work occasionally and the goods are always in stock and the prices are very fair.

Hopefully the above will save a someone a lot of internet trawling!!

The bearings I removed were terrible - they felt OK until some load was applied and then turned and the notchiness was alarming !!!!

The new bearings have transformed the way the mount feels when moved around either axis.

hi Billy I've just purchased your recommendations, can I ask if I need to grease the bearings on arrival or are they already greased?

Many thanks
