M42 finally finished

Recommended Posts

We gathered the ha for this last winter then had to wait till this year to grab the colour data. We posted this here a few weeks ago when we had first processed it, and the result wasn't exactly brilliant- the ha had overwhelmed the whole thing and it was far too red; we had also lost a lot of the faint outer gases during the process. However, after a couple more aborted attempts, we think we have finally worked out the correct settings in Pixinsight for dealing correctly with the core and for adding the ha in the right proportions  . So this is our final image, and we are much happier with it! It is a combination of 15 x 10 minutes in ha, 15 x 10 minutes in blue and green and 18 x 10 minutes in red, with 15 x 25 seconds per channel to deal with the core. It was taken with the Atik 460EX, through the Takahashi FSQ106N and was processed in Pixinsight. Comments welcomed.
