Lunt 50mm H-alpha unpacked

Recommended Posts

My wife has very kindly bought me a Lunt 50mm H-alpha for my 50th birthday. It arrived yesterday and I have been allowed to unpack it to check that everything looks to be in order even though by birthday isn't until the end of March.

I was surprised at how small and heavy this instrument is and I must say it looks like a fabulous piece of engineering with a real quality feel to it. The zoom eyepeice also looks like a great little piece of kit with a very smooth action.

I can't wait to be allowed to use it!!!

Here are the obligatory unpacking photographs...

When l received mine just before Christmas my wife said do you want me to buy it for you for Christmas, how much was it? when l told her she nearly fainted. Be interesting what your views are of the zoom eyepiece at the minute l,m using a seben 8-24 zoom which l find very good with this scope.

Very nice looking kit. The Lunt zoom is nice and sharp, and has pretty decent eye relief (the 15mm stated is correct I would say. I did replace it with a WO Zoom which has 3mm more, which makes it just that little bit more comfortable for me with my glasses. In terms of detail, contrast and internal reflections there is nothing in it

It is going to be a very hard wait until March, really tough. In a few short weeks the years will just pile on and you will reach 50 prematurely (in a week at most ;))

Well, it's worth a shot :D

It has now been removed from the house and will be stored at my Mother-in-Law's until a few days before SGL10. Pretty sneaky of my wife using the MIL as a guard dog if you ask me!!

I decided to include the zoom after reading a few reviews here on SGL, including yours, Michael. I almost went for a new Baader zoom (sold mine a few weeks ago!) but thought it worth giving this one a go. Will report back in a few weeks.

  • 11 months later...

Update: the Lunt Zoom was very good with this scope but bit the dust when I started using TV Delos  6mm and 10mm and the Ethos 8mm EPs with it.

Twelve months on I am very happy to own this and it has given me many hours of pleasure, particularly during the eclipse at SGL-X.
