Hi Saliens and welcome to the forum. I would agree with Stellarium as a useful to both find and identify what you see on your travels. Book wise, you might want to think of 'Turn left at Orion' which list some 100 objects that are categorised into the four seasons and can be viewed using modest sized equipment. Many people here including myself, have started with this great guide as a way of learning the night sky. Each object comes with both written and pictorial instructions on how to locate the object as well as supplying plenty of background information should the clouds come in - and they sometimes do!  If you want to see the layout then you can have a look here for further details.

In the mean time here's wishing you clear skies and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Hi Steve and welcome to SGL, age knows bounds in this hobby, so long as you can stand the cold. Many thin warm layers are better than a single heavy coat and pay special attention to footwear, there is nothing worse than cold feet, enjoy your new scope :)
