The most often photographed isle in the sky...

... M31, of course.

Photographed last weekend (October 25 - 26) at the semi-annually starparty in "Wateren", the Netherlands. Conditions weren't great. The SQM reached 20.8 magn/arcsec², while 21.5 magn/arcsec² is more common for the location. Total integration time: 3 hours and 20 minutes (or 4 hours and 20 minutes if you take the extra hour caused by the summer/winter time conversion into account...  ). 5 min. subs at ISO 1600 with a Canon 5D Mark II DLSR. F = 500 mm f/2.8 (Takahashi Epsilon 180ED). Further technical details can be found on my website.

And 'The making of...' (image courtesy of Ronald Huyps). Can you spot a tiny M31 in the sky?

Great shot mftoet :)

5 min subs, so how is it possible that you did not burn a core of galaxy?

Adam.

It is, only the sheer wealth of detail and colour makes it a negative spec.. :D

Its simply that awesome..

Thanks everyone for your nice comments! The Tak E-180ED and Canon 5D Mark II make a happy marriage indeed.

It certainly is...I like the subtle diffraction spikes from that scope and of course the flat field and the f/2.8 light gathering.
