Hi Steve, I have checked the exposure details for the photo, here goes.

30 sec exposure, at f3.5, focal length 18mm, ISO 1000.

I did submit to the BBC Sky at Night web site but no joy. will look at one of the magazines.

I have loaded a one from the same sequence.

Awesome picture Nabban

Northern lights are caused by light emitted from atoms in the

atmosphere which are excited by charged particles trapped in and

leaking out of the van Allen radiation belts. These are places

where the charged particles are trapped by the magnetic field of

the earth. The belts, of course, come into the earth's

atmosphere around the earth's magnetic poles, which is why the

aurora is mainly near the north and south poles of the earth.

Anyway, the light emitted is characteristic of the atoms making

up the atmosphere of the earth which are, of course, mainly

nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen and so the colors are

characteristic of these atoms.

Further explanations of northern lights are available many

places. You might enjoy clicking on the URL below, which I found

to be a good explanation.

thats really cool Nabban. Really surprised S@N did nothing with it. I'm sure the magazines would publish it though.

Only seen Aurora once and that was October 2003. It rarely makes an appearance this far south

Sorry, not the S@N magazine, submitted to the BBC website for inclusion in the site / programme, the magazine wasn't around at the time, will now submit to the mag.

nabban

That October 2003 display was spectacular, I believe it was visible as far south as the northern Mediterranean.

I observed it, but didn't have a camera to hand, so missed it .
