Using my pseudoxenoarcheological powers of deduction I can tell you the alien had its leg ripped off by a passing Martian lizard, they are voracious and must be treated with extreme caution.

Fortunately Martians can re-grow legs, in distress they will shed a entire limb and escape on the remaining two while their attacker is distracted. This accounts for the absence of the rest of the skeleton.
