The Herschel Catalog ....

Recommended Posts

Thanks folks for the info.  As both atlases go down to 7.5 magnitude for stars I think I'll opt for this one!

If you're not specifically interested in the Herschels and their discoveries then I'd recommend getting an atlas that plots DSOs by their NGC number (the standard designation). S&T Pocket Atlas plots stars to 7.6 mag and DSOs to about 12 mag. I use it a lot - I use it with the finder, then a more detailed atlas (used to be Uranometria, now Great Atlas of the Sky) as I home in on faint targets. Another alternative is SkyAtlas 2000 (which I also have, and used extensively), but S&T Pocket is a handy size (as the name suggests). The Herschel atlas is great but it fills a special niche, by plotting DSOs with their obsolete H/h designations. I would only recommend buying it if the H/h numbers are specifically required as opposed to NGC numbers. Pocket Atlas plots "Herschel 400" objects by NGC numbers, in a distinct typeface (bold IIRC).
