Messier AR-102/1000

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all,

I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this scope, I'm thinking holiday portability as opposed to the 200p I have.. would sit it on the eq5..

cant find any reviews on it per say but i'm expecting it to be a stable mate of the evostar100... which again I cant really find any reviews on.. (mainly because everybody buys TAL's)

Thanks in advance

When one of these was on offer in a local camera shop I recommended it to a colleague who was looking for a nice scope that would not break the bank. This was at least 7 years ago, and he still is very pleased with it. At F/10 chromatic aberration is hardly a problem, the scope performs very well on planetary and lunar, and does a very decent job on many DSOs (except for the most extended ones, then you really want a shorter focal length). He bought several of my old EPs (first the 36mm, 26mm, and 10mm Plossls, later the 9 and 7mm LVs), as I bought more expensive kit (I always give right of first refusal). I have looked through his scope at several star parties we organised at his place, and it is a nice instrument. My only worry as a travel scope is its length, but if you can take along an EQ5 mount, I suppose a 1m long scope is not a problem ("I'm telling you my dear, the scope is not too big, the car is too small" ;))

Hi Fozzie,

This was my first scope when I returned to the game a few years ago. EQ5 will handle it just fine. Mine gives very good views, although I didn't do much high-power planetary observing. The Moon and the Sun are beautiful, especially with a binoviewer at 40x (Baader MaxBright in my case; it reaches focus without diagonal; using the bino with diagonal requires a Barlow). Terrestrial views are also very good.

Note that it is not that small nor very light (I think it's around 5 kg).

Photos in good seeing:

These days I use it for H-alpha with 90 mm effective aperture (see the link in my sig.), still performs very well.

That's about the same weight as my C8 OTA, which is both my main and my travel-by-car scope :D (will also sit happily on an EQ5, but is of course much more expensive).

Thanks for the responses... I missed out on a c6 recently (FLO sale... You've got to be real quick!) that would have been ideal... I do keep considering a mak if I'm thinking about planets and moon... That might be a better option...
