Can someone tell me what this black patch is?

Took an exposure of a random part of the sky and this is what appears, anyone know what it is?

Or am I just being a dummy?

No I took other pictures and the smudge wasn't there, only in that part of sky

In all seriousness you need to clean your lens and possibly the camera's sensor. Try a bulb blower first. A bug possibly?

I just took another picture, wider shot, and you can still see the smudge but it's in the same place of the sky

The fact that it stays in the same part if the sky, and the size changes when I zoom, makes me think it isn't the camera

  dust i have had some funny shapes due to dust on the sensor and cant see it on normal photo's

try going outside and getting a picture it looks like it could be a reflection from behind the camera in your last post

You are taking the picture from indoors by the looks of it. So I'd say it looks like something on the window or a reflection.

@SteveWard It could be, but the second picture was taken at a different angle and zoom, so if it was something inside the room then shouldn't it have moved places and stayed the same size?

one of two things  possible three. 

1: your shooting through a window i guess ( am seeing the reflection in the upper left quadrant)

if so your glass has some sort of smear.

2.: you have somehow damaged the fine coating on your lens , OR it is a dew/water blotch that you have smeared.

i would advise using a decent lens clean fluid solution so a trip to camera store is at hand. also a new microfibre cloth.

3. a water/dirt/dust mark on your main LPF in the camera. so i would advise a deep clean of the sensor and the filtering

this usualy means sending camera off for a propper service. 

i am putting my bet in either number 1 or/and 2

I think its something on your sensor or lens. I had some sort of weird sky serpent on my images the other day. I activated  the in camera sensor clean, no joy the serpent was still there then I did a full sensor clean, it took a while and still no joy My little tip is check the lens first its much easier to clean than a sensor. I'll  try and remember that myself next time it could save me a heap of time and stress

I have found the problem, It's a really faint reflection of my turned of lights, my laptop is causing it to cast a very faint shadow, almost invisible to the naked eye on the window. I feel stupid now...
