Another Eyepiece Question

Recommended Posts

Astral Enigma........hi, allegedly,  BST comes from the company name, BarSTa, the folk who manufacture the eyepiece. There is also the Astrotech-Paradigm, N-ED, Olivion ED & Orion Epic eyepieces, should you  ever come across these, all of the same build quality, just the brand names are different. Their colour  coded bands may differ from eyepiece to eyepiece? The BST's are favourable in the UK and are inexpensive at £49 GBP.

...then you discover that focusing is quite difficult, and you always feel

you are out of focus because of the coma (at about 40% of the FOV).

do you mean coma or astigmatism? Coma is of course a characteristic of the scope and not the eyepiece. assuming you have a fast newtonian (coma) then focusing is always more critical too compared with a slower scope (even a slower newtonian).

Cuivenion..

no..not telling you off...but I know exactly what you are thinking..

BST..fair/good reviews, excellent eyepieces, good contrast and

recommended even in a fast dob !

Why pay more ?!!

and then you use them..and the first few weeks you think..hmm..nice..

...then you discover that focusing is quite difficult, and you always feel

you are out of focus because of the coma (at about 40% of the FOV).

And then...you start thinking...damn...

why didn't I save a bit longer, why did I settle..why...why

(facepalm)

Can't say I've noticed that to be honest. I've been happier with the 18mm, but in fairness the last time I was out my targets were galaxies and clusters. The 18mm is the better choice of eyepiece for these targets in a scope like mine as far as I'm aware. The 8mm has not had much of a look in due to the seeing conditions I've had, but it was providing great views of the Moon and Jupiter one night.
