Moonshane's sketches

Thanks to some advice from SGL members I bought some decent pencils today and redid from memory (with some artistic licence) the first sketch below which was done in mono at the eyepiece with colour added later

using my new pencils I created the following sketch with the whole disk coloured with the orange tones and the darker brownish markings added over the top.

finally my favourite of the three in which I added the brown markings first and then the orange around the other areas.

Shane it's great to really see you get stuck into sketching and this shows just how much they are improving.

I've found it to be quite a steep learning curve, half the battle is learning a drawing technique that looks good, accurate and still easy enough to do at the EP but that's part of the fun.

I can't remember the last time I observed without my sketch pad? I think I'd feel a bit lost if I just observed and didn't record it. :)

cheers Mike

I agree it's an excellent aspect of the hobby and one I honestly never thought I'd ever make use of - I am terrible at art (although not bad with a camera) but with a little concentration I am at least managing to make my note books look a bit more attractive.

Managed a sketch of Mars just after midnight last night and it seems I missed the main action! The seeing was quite poor and I am still getting used to the pencils but not bad when compared with the Calsky image. If you squint and stand on one leg it resembles it a bit.

Managed a couple of sun sketches today too with the whole disk and then AR 2036 in more detail. Not the best full disk I have done but quite pleased with the close up.
