What did I just see?

Earlier tonight (around 11ish) as I was walking through the front door, I turned to look at the north-west to see how clear the sky was, as I did, a really really strange something fell from the sky, a little like a flare going off and falling, it had a green tail and edges and was white in the center, it died away very quickly and was only there for a few seconds at the most. It had a strange whooshing noise to it as well, like when you light a match and it flares up a little....

Was this manmade? Any ideas anyone?

That close and that visible? Wow! I had in my head that when people see them they're just little specks miles away, this seemed really close!!!

Could be a fireball, but also could be a firework. How much separation was there between what you saw, and the sound it made?
