HELP!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I recently recieved a Skywatcher Synscan AZ GT mount as a present but as a complete beginner i do not have a clue how to set it up properly eg stars, dates and times. i have read the instruction manual (several times) and come to the conclusion i must be thick.

Unfortunatly as far as i know there are no clubs in the Wigan area so i can't ask anyone to come and help.

Does anyone know if there is a DVD or something that might help me to set it up.

There may be no clubs around Wigan, but there is one in Bolton.  That's not too far away, is it?  I'll admit my knowledge of the geography of the north west of England is a bit sketchy in places.

There's five within 10 (ish) miles

I have about five to choose from here. Unfotunately they're all about 25 miles away!

Wigan:

Longitude: 002  38 W

Latitude:      53   33 N

Timezone:   -0 (No idea why but I think it wants -0 instead of 0)

At the start the location name is whatever you want, keep it short, try WIG.

The scope will ask for Time and DST when it is switched on, more accurately when you ask it to align..

Think Time is 24Hr format so 8:00PM is 20:00

DST is OFF or NO.

Cannot help with the stars - use stars not planets, don't use Polaris.

If you can try something like Aldebaren, big orange star sat very much on it's own. Therefore easy to work out which one it is in tne scope= Its the BIG orange one.

Good common preactise is the start out with the mount level and the scope tube level and point the scope tube North, if nothing else it looks good and the less experienced will think you know something.

Check if the Synscan has a Polar Alignment option.

If it has then from the position mentioned, use the movement keys to get Polaris in the view.

After that I have no idea as the SW pdf I am reading doesn't cover this option, sure it exists.

What software.firmware version have you ?

My thoughts are centre on Polaris and then you "may" have the option of one other star to at least get going.

Generally the better everything is levelled the easier it is as the scope does not have to handle large errors.

How many constellations, stars do you know?
