I bunged my 40mm MV 68deg in my F4.9 Dob (8.16mm exit pupil) and was surprised that the views were actually quite nice and certainly usable. Some rules, are more a rule of thumb than they are absolutes.

A lot depends on your eyes. I have a 40mm TV plossl and with that in the f/4.7 I see a big dark blob in the middle of the view
