How to tell the wife...?

Recommended Posts

Whilst I am - just six months after buying my first telescope - certainly still a novice as far as astronomy is concerned I did become a specialist in another major subject directly related to astronomy -> How to hide the hobbies true costs from the wife :-)

Think I am - at this stage - about 1,200 true Pound Sterling into astronomy with the reported cost being about 500 Wife Sterling :-)

A 200mm dobson, 6 EPs, a 90mm refractor (sold), a GC-4 mount, a 76/300 heritage (sold), an 80ED, tools and filters and another £200 on order...

So how are you managing that hole in your pocket astronomy may cause?

Honesty is the best policy, the wrath of the human female is well documented elsewhere.......

I'm in the position that my wife enjoys stargazing as well & the current obsy project is more or less her idea.

So it's easy for me to be honest.

Needs must though & some planning may be needed, just don't push the True - Wife exchange rate too far!!

Clear Skies,

Well, my wife bought a designer handbag the other month so been milking that, im good for another £250 after buying my scope. Other than that, planning a "WOW Look what Santa brought me!!!" moment on christmas day. Hopefully if i get a couple of glasses of champers down her beforehand it might go well... otherwise its going to cost me a set of matching designer shoes :(

Money doesn't mean anything in my household - for everything is based on shoes and handbags.....

For example a nice televue nagler eyepiece = 1 pair of shoes or 1/4 of a new handbag.....

Its not how you tell the missus - its how you need to justify/equate it in her language ;)

I think you lot just aren't looking around for bargains. I've got a 200P Synscan Pro for £400. A Nagler for £50. A Delos for £50. An ES 14 100" for £50. All brand new from top retailers! Just ask my wife! She's quite good too, I lent her some money to buy a handbag from Aldi for just £300 :D

I have no chance of hiding the true cost from my other half, as she is also into the hobby and knows the prices better than me! I am sure I would have had a cooled CCD by now otherwise :evil:

But then again anything you want Sarah might also want. So it's not all bad ;).

I'm surprised you didn't mention she's also a member here, so even if you did manage to slip an eyepiece past her then Sarah would still read it on SGL :p.

I must be one of the few SGL members who has said NO to the other half on gettting another scope

It was a second hand ED100 FLO was selling with Moonlite focuser. We ended up getting an ED100 later anyway, minus the Moonlite. :BangHead:

And Sarah was right, it's a lovely scope...
