Help with wiring x6 AA battery pack up to a switch for LED light!

today i went to maplins to buy a RED LED strip light to go on the base of my scope with the intention of wiring it up to a AA battery pack well i have just done so and the battery pack has just got really really hot what i have done wrong? i thought it would be easy lol they said in the shop it should be fine and actually showed me the setup in the shop and now when i have tried at home its gone all wrong. ive soldered the wires in now aswell :rolleyes:  any sparkys help me hout

To run a LED from a given voltage a resistor needs to be connected in series with it  calculated by  R=(Vs-Vf) / lf where Vs is supply voltage, Vf is the forward voltage drop across the LED and lf is the forward current through the LED, the Vf &Vl values

are shown in LED spec's

Example: lf = 20ma & Vf = 2.5v with 12volt supply R=(12-2.5) / 0.02 =475 ohm. rounded down to 470 ohm.

If you purchased the light for a 9v supply it may already have resistance built in.
