Hi,

I have just received my webcam after having it modded for long exposure but need to get an adaptor as my laptop doesn't have a serial port. Can I buy any serial to parallel and parallel to USB or does it have to be a certain type?

Thanks.

I think that there are a number of serial to USB cables available, but you need to be a bit careful to get one that works well with your kit.

frugal is correct - not all Serial to USB cables will work. Unfortunately I'm at work and so can't tell you the one I purchased.

Myself I found the driver software for the serial/usb unit wasn't compatable with the webcam.

I'v made a note and i'll post the one I did buy which worked.

(I'm running Xp on an old Laptop).

Best to get one with a Prolific PL-2303 chip. There are drivers for XP right the way through to Win 8. Also works well under Linux.

Beware of fake Prolific units, too.  There were quite a few around a while back.  The FTDI chipset is also very reliable in my experience.
